The market in one line
The AI trade cracked and oil revived inflation fears: the Nasdaq fell 2.6% to 26,008.86 and the S&P 500 1.2% to 7,663.43, while Brent jumped to about $112.9 a barrel — its highest since May.
South Africa
- Rand: about 1% weaker near R16.53/$ — South Africa imports most of its fuel, so a higher oil price hits the currency directly.
- JSE Top 40: down about 1.2%.
- Fuel: the mid-year budget brings back temporary fuel levy relief for two months from November, worth about R10bn.
United States
- Chip stocks led the fall: Lam Research about −9%, Applied Materials and KLA about −6%, AMD and Intel −4% to −5%, NVIDIA about −2%.
- Meta fell 6.98% to $648.85.
- Treasuries rallied: the 10-year yield fell about 11bp to near 5.0%.
Commodities
- Gold slipped for a fifth session to about $4,084/oz as traders priced a possible December Fed hike.
- Brent rose about 3.7% on Middle East escalation.
What I’m watching
- The 28 October FOMC — a hawkish tone with oil above $110 would keep pressure on long-duration tech.
- Results season: Alphabet and Amphenol report on 28 October; AMD and Arista on 3 November.
- The rand vs Brent: every sustained move in oil shows up in the rand and, a month later, in the petrol price.
The analyst’s view
Our house view on the big platforms has been cautious on valuation, and Thursday showed why: when the market questions AI spending, the most expensive names fall hardest. For South African investors the bigger story is oil — it weakens the rand and keeps inflation, and the SARB, on alert.
